New rules for using mobile devices while driving
From 1st February, drivers holding any mobile devices while driving will be met with harsher penalties. Whereas previously only texting and calling on your mobile was punishable. This was in response to a 20 per cent increase in mobile phone related offenses over the last two years. This increased from 2,938 in 2012 to 3,572 in 2013.
Here's what you need to know about the changes...
1. Mobile devices - Anyone caught holding any mobile devices that includes tablets will be liable under the new rules.
2. Using it - The new regulation covers everything and Irregardless of what purpose you're holding it for, be it web surfing, updating social media etc. Even when you're stopped at the red light.
3. Mounted - If your mobile phone or electronic device is securely mounted, you are not flouting the rules. The regulation only involves drivers holding on to the device with their hands.
4. Penalties - First-time offenders can be fined up to $1,000 and/or jailed for up to six months. Repeat offenders face up to $2,000 in fines and/or up to 12 months in jail.
