Nissan's Self-cleaning car

Nissan's Self-cleaning car

Hydrophobic coatings were the rage a few years ago, with manufacturers from all fields having a stab at using the product on their items. It took a while, but finally an automaker is experimenting with the coating. According to Nissan, their coating is called Ultra-Ever Dry, and is made up of chemicals that are  super-hydrophobic and oleophobic. This little infomercial shows Nissan coating one half of a bog stock Nissan Note, before driving it through mud and water. The coated side was virtually clean, whereas the uncoated side was covered in grime. Is this the start of the self-cleaning car? Well no. According to Nissan, the product is still in the early stages development, and it will be at least a few years before it is offered as an aftermarket option. Currently there are no plans to roll the coating out as an option on production cars. Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
