According to reports, the latest Prius is capable of 4.7 liters/100 km. The yet-to-be-released plugin version however, is capable of an astounding 3.6 liters/100 km.

The surprising figures were also gleaned from "real world" testing, and not from controlled conditions inside a lab.

Toyota's Alternative Fuel Vehicles manager, Bill Reinert, was also quoted saying that he had "asked his guys to drive them as you drive your normal Prius."

The Prius plug-in hybrids are expected to reach the market by early 2011.
