To improve traffic conditions, the stretch of Paterson Road has been widened from four lanes to five lanes in both directions. Additional turning lanes have also been added to cater to the high traffic volumes turning into Orchard Road and Orchard Boulevard from Paterson Road.

As early as 2007, works has started to improve this stretch of Paterson Road and Scotts Road. Heavy traffic flow has been observed along Paterson Road, in particular, at the junctions of Orchard Road and Orchard Boulevard, where there are noticeable queues of vehicles lining along Paterson Road to make the turn.

The completion of the road improvement works is expected to ease the congestion along Paterson Road in both directions, especially for vehicles turning into Orchard Road and Orchard Boulevard during the peak hours.

A new pedestrian underpass across Paterson Road connecting Wheelock Place and Ion Orchard will also be opened from 21 July onwards. This new pedestrian crossing facility will provide a sheltered and direct connection between Wheelock Place, Ion Orchard and the Orchard MRT station. Pedestrians should make use of the new pedestrian underpass when crossing Paterson Road. Please refer to Annex B for the location of the new pedestrian underpass.

In conjunction with the traffic improvement works, as well as the opening of the new pedestrian underpass, the existing street level pedestrian crossing between Wheelock Place and Ion Orchard will be removed from 11pm, 28 July onwards. With the removal of the pedestrian crossing, the additional lanes along Paterson Road will be opened to traffic concurrently.

To familiarise pedestrians with the new underground crossing facility, temporary signs and new directional signs will be put up to direct pedestrians to the new underground crossing facility. Guides and Auxiliary Police Officers will also be on site to direct and guide pedestrians.
