SE: New technology set to improve range of electric cars.

Volvo Automotive is the only car manufacturer that has taken part in an EU-funded research project, with nine other major participants. Their goal? To create something to replace the bulky batteries in hybrids and electric cars of today, while still maintaining the efficient capacity of power and performance. The project spanned over three and a half years, and their vision is realized in the form of car panels bolted to a Volvo S80. They are made from a combination of carbon fibre and a polymer resin, creating an advanced nanomaterial that acts as a structural super capacitor. This material houses the battery, and the duo have been moulded to fit around the cars frame. To make the material, the carbon fibre laminate is first layered, and then it is shaped and cured in an oven to harden. Super capacitors are integrated within the component skin, which will replace existing components to store and charge energy. With this technology, it is estimated that an electric car would be up to 15% lighter.Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
