SG: AAS calls for complete overhaul of vehicular policies.
Singapore’s oldest motoring club, the 105-year old Automobile Association of Singapore (AAS) has called for a complete revamp of Singapore's vehicular policies. Their first target was the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) quota system, which is more than 20 years old this year. According to AAS President Mr Bernard Tay, the government should conduct ‘a comprehensive review’ of the system, rather than ‘making make piecemeal changes which may solve one problem but create new ones .’ To make owning a car a reality for the middle income families, there have been suggestions that the LTA should to away with the engine displacement banding to one that classifies cars by their class. LTA may also consider extra charges for people owning more than one car.
According to AAS Chief Executive, Lee Wai Mun, the policies should be reviewed "to facilitate a more optimal usage of road space". Rather than reducing car ownership, vehicular policies should work on reducing congestion instead.
