SG: Caltex and People's Association Inspire Students in Community Outreach Programme
The 'Caltex PAssion for Kids' Programme 2013 provided about 200 students from less privileged backgrounds the opportunity to gain knowledge, develop new life skills and be exposed to new ways of thinking through quality workshops. Besides core academic modules, the students were given the opportunity to pursue their interests and passion by taking part in two lifestyle courses of their choice, which were conducted by People's Association (PA) registered Trainers. This year’s Programme also saw a record number of participants, more than double the number of students compared to last year.
During the event, Guest-of-Honor Grassroots Adviser Ms. Indranee Thurai Rajah, Senior Minister of State for Law and Education and Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC joined some of the students in a short Zumba Fitness dance.
“The 'Caltex PAssion for Kids' exemplifies the spirit of 'A Community with Heart'. It’s heartening to see both the private and public sector coming together with the common goal of wanting to better our community, especially in helping our youths. Ensuring that our children get the right education is critical, as they are our future and we must ensure that they are all given every chance of success. 'Caltex PAssion for Kids' is a great initiative that gives students from less privileged background the opportunity to learn and make them believe that they too can make a difference in our society. We definitely hope to see more of these programs in the future,” said Grassroots Adviser Ms. Indranee Thurai Rajah.
Echoing similar sentiments, Mr. Ang Hak Seng, BBM, Chief Executive Director of PA said, “The partnership between PA and Chevron has worked well due to our shared vision to better our community and nurturing our young. This year’s programme was made more enriching with a customised core workshop and lifestyle courses, designed and conducted by PA Trainers at the Community Clubs. Through these courses, the students not only picked up lifelong skills but also given the opportunity to pursue their interests. More importantly, knowing more new friends and supporting one another in their quest towards realizing their aspiration and dreams in life.”
The closing carnival will celebrate the children’s learning journey in achieving their dreams and aspirations in life. These students will also share their experiences and showcased the skills learnt during the Programme.
As part of the fund-raising efforts, Caltex donated $2 towards the Programme from every $50 of petrol pumped by its customers, through a donation drive and a PAssion Card promotion. From April to June 2013, a total of $120,000 was raised, a 100% increase compared to last year. Caltex has announced that it will continue its partnership with PA to launch the 2014 edition of the Caltex PAssion for Kids programme and will release details closer to the date next year.
