SG: Car population shrinks

For the first time in more than a decade, the vehicle population in Singapore has shrunk. According to statistics provided by the LTA, the total vehicle population at the end of June this year was 971,871, a 0.2% decrease from end 2013’s 974,170. Private cars took the greatest plunge of 0.4%, from 607,292 to 604,633.  The decrease has been attributed to the drop in the COE supply. That said, the figures may slowly be reversed, for the COE supply has begun to increase again, albeit at a very slow pace. This is due to government's plan of capping annual vehicle population growth at 0.5 percent,  2.5 down from the 3% in the past.Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
