SG: Driver sentenced to jail for 1 month after fatal crash
32 year old engineer Singarayar Cleetruse Geethan, was driving home from work at about 5:45pm on the 20th of June in 2012 when his car mounted a pavement along Woodlands Drive 14 and killed 64-year old Mdm Gwee Ham Siau. The Sri Lankan national, a Singapore Permanent Resident, confessed to causing the death of Mdm Gwee and injuring her daughter-in-law, Ms Hasmidah Ho Bee Keng and her grandson Oh Wei Jie as a result of negligent driving. Mdm Gwee passed away in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital two hours after the accident occured. It is believed that her death may have been caused by the head and chest injuries she had suffered as a result of the crash. Ms Ho had a fractured right foot and her son, who was 7 at the point of the crash, fractured his left leg.
Mr Geethan and his lawyer, Mr Louis Joseph, pleaded for a light sentence, sighting jetlag that caused Geethan to suffer from fatigue behind the wheel. He could have been jailed for up to two years or fined up to $10,000 or both for causing death by driving negligently.
