SG: Driver who caused riot not guilty

55-year old Mr. Lee Kim Huat, a private bus driver, ran over and killed Sakthivel Kumaravelu, 33, an Indian national, at Little India on the 8th of December last year. The fatal accident sparked off Singapore’s first mass riot since the 60s. Mr Lee was found not guilty after videographic and photographic evidence supplied by the traffic police. Based on their findings, Mr. Sakthivel had 3 times the legal amount of alcohol concentration in his blood at the time of the accident, and was 'moderately to severely intoxicated'. Before the accident, he board the private bus as Tekka Lane that would bring him back to the dormitory in Jurong. However, he decided to drop his Bermuda shorts, and was asked to get off. He then chased the bus, and ended up meeting his maker, for despite of the bus’s relatively low speed of about 5.6km/h to 5.9km/h, Mr Sakthivel was killed when he stumbled and fell into the path of the bus.
