SG: Fare increases, while poly students get concession rates
Commuters that utilise the public transport network in Singapore that are not eligible for concession will have to pay 4 to 6 cents more per trip starting from the 6th April this year. The Public Transport Council announced the hikes in a press briefing on Thursday. For Adults, fares will increase from 4 to 6 cents, for senior citizens, 2 to 3 cents, and for students, 2 cents. It is estimated that adults may have to pay up to $21 for transport, senior citizens may have to fork out an extra $10, and students, an extra $7. The PTC have increased the fares by just 3.2%, a lot lower than the initial estimation of 6.6%. According to the PTC, this has been done to ensure public transport remains affordable. The fare hike will add roughly S$53.5 million a year in fare revenue for SBS Transit and SMRT. The money is aimed to help boost the companies’ finances, which in turn, enables them to use the cash to improve service standards, and to increase their fleet.
It isn’t all glum for the commuters though. For the first time, Poly students will receive concessions at rates similar to that of their JC counterparts. Currently, Poly concessions are about twice of that of the rates JC students are paying.
