SG: Fare revisions to be submitted by December
The Public Transport Council has given SMRT and SBS Transit up till December to submit fare revisions. Many predict that adult riders would face the greatest increase in fare, while the needy would be given assistance when it comes to transport. Usually, the review is done and the fares altered on a yearly basis. Since the fares have not been altered since 2012, there is a possibility of up to a 6.6% increase in the fare. However, Transport Minister, Lui Tuck Yew, said that the fare increase should not surpass the annual wage rise, an estimated figure of 5%. Should the fare hike really be capped by 5%, the remaining 1.6% may be carried over and implemented in 2015. Fares across the board will increase, with some commuteres forking out more than the others. SMRT has announced that they are in the midst of realigning their fares and operating ccosts to better find a balance between them. SBS Transit is likely to follow suit.Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
