SG: Increased fees for rail operators
Train operators will pay as much as 2.5 times more in annual fees to the LTA as a result of the increase in regulatory oversight and more stringent monitoring of performance standards; train breakdowns are becoming far too frequent here, mostly caused by aging trains and tracks, compromising our public transport network, causing unhappiness amongst the commuters. All the monitoring increases cost, although the increase is unlikely to translate into higher fares. So what does this mean for our duopoly public transport network? Well, SMRT will have to fork out $663,000 to run the Circle Line, and up to $5.7 million to keep its North-South and East-West lines running. SBS Transit will have to fork out $1.1 million for the North-East line, and $1.9 million for the newly opened Downtown Line. Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
