SG: Lesser breakdowns for local trains.

SG: Lesser breakdowns for local trains.

Contrary to popular belief, our trains have not become worse, but instead better. Well, at least that is the opinion of Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew, who mentioned in parliament about the improvement in reliability and attributed the increased dependability with the large pools of cash invested on maintenance and improvements. That said however, there was something bugging him about the way SMRT handled the three breakdowns last month, with him believing that they rail operator could have provided more timely information to the commuters. The LTA and SMRT are spending close to $500,000 in a bid to improve the older trains operating on the North-South and East-West lines by 2016, along with an ongoing upgrading scheme of replacing the signalling system, scheduled for completion in 2018. SMRT has spent almost 65% more on maintenance as compared to 2011. Meanwhile, SBS Transit has also spent some decent funds to replace part of the North-East Line’s overhead power rails, and more to refresh their decade old trains.
