SG: Loose Aluminium Cladding causes road closure

Loose aluminium sheeting on the side of an overhead bridge that connects Peace Centre and Wilkie Edge caused two roads to be closed for more than 3 hours yesterday. This comes after concerns that the loose bits may injure motorists or users of the bridge. 29 year old Mr Rilesh Ravindran, who works at Peace Centre called the police after seeing a sheet of aluminium peeling off the bridge. It started out by slightly peeling, but violent gusts of wind eventually ripped it out aggressively.

The bridge is well used; there are at least 10 people on the bridge at any one time. At the time of the incident, there were people on the bridge. Thankfully, no one was hurt. This incident meant that Sophia Road and Wilkie Road had to be closed from about 1:30pm to 5:00pm. At around 3:30 pm, a worker was lifted up on a crane to remove the loose bits.

The Land Transport Authority received an alert from the public at about 11:00am. They then dispatched a contractor to remove the affected sheeting. The overhead bridge has been assessed to be structurally safe for pedestrian usage. Investigations are ongoing.
