SG: Merc beats red lights and ploughs into 3 taxis
Daryl Wee, 51, a taxi driver, was taking his passenger to Tanjong Rhu where he was stopped at the junction with Middle Road by a red light. The accident occured at the smaller junction of Victoria St & Middle Road, close to the scene of the fatal collision between a Ferrari 599GTO and a taxi last year. He pulled up at a light, only to find a Mercedes Benz E class continue driving straight on at the ‘turn right’ lane. The Benz nearly knocked down 3 pedestrians that were crossing the road at the time. That is not the worst part of the story. As soon as the Benz beat the lights, it veered violently to the left and drove across the junction, only to find itself wedged in the rear of a stationery taxi. The impact forced the taxi forwards, clattering into the back of a blue lorry in front. Out of fear, the passengers onboard the taxi made a quick exit.
The Benz continued to cause chaos; it drove forward into the second junction on that stretch of road, slamming itself into another taxi before spinning and colliding with the road divider. Eyewitnesses said that the car was travelling extremely quickly, and the resulting collision was extremely loud. Up to 6 people raced to the beached Mercedes to find out what exactly happened. They approached the wreck to find a man wearing a checkered shirt and black pants in his 50s slumped across the wheel. He still had his seatbelt on, and had blood pouring out of his mouth. He was shaking and trembling.
The 6 of them then carried the injured man onto the grass patch and left him there to rest. The driver had visible injuries, such as a spongy chest, an indication of broken ribs and internal injuries. The passers-by stayed with the man until the ambulance arrived. The man was not drunk, but he is suspected to have fainted behind the wheel. Investigations are on going.
