SG: More caught for illegal modifications.
The number of motorists caught for sporting illegal modifications has increased to 1240 monthly, almost 10 times than the 146 monthly average in 2008. An LTA spokesperson cites increased enforcement efforts and tip-offs as the reason for the increase the case. Motorists caught with illegally modified vehicles can be liable to a $1,000 fine or a jail term of no more than three months while repeat offenders could be charged with a half year jail term or a $2,000 fine. That is not all. After a rule revision, LTA is now legally allowed to detain an illegally modified vehicle for up to three months while the owner is being charged in court. This is subject to the courts approval. That said, this is reserved for severe cases or repeat offenders. Despite all the strict regulations, petrolheads islandwide believe that illegally modified vehicles are only as safe as the driver of the vehicle. Some cite the rising cost of OEM parts as the reason why they switched to an aftermarket alternative.
