SG: More sheltered walkways to be built by 2018

Commuters who walk to take the bus or the train can look forward to a more pleasant experience when the Walk2Ride programme is completed in 2018. The scheme, which will add more than 200km of new sheltered walkways, is worth $143.8 million, and has been awarded to Or Kim Peow Contractors Pte Ltd. The first of the two contracts will see the firm install said walkways at 38 LRT stations in Bukit Panjang, Sengkang and Punggol, and the second contract, which covers 29 MRT stations in the central and southern area of Singapore as well as Bukit Merah bus interchange, is awarded for $82.9 million. Construction will begin in Q4 2015, and will be completed by 2018. Under the Walk2Ride programme, the LTA will expand the coverage of the sheltered walkway network by ensuring sheltered connectivity between transport nodes and schools, health care facilities, residential developments and public amenities within a 400m radius of all MRT stations and within a 200m radius of all LRT stations and bus interchanges.Pictures used for illustration purposes only.
