SG: National Taxi Association criticises SMRT over contract issues

SMRT Taxi drivers were not pleased when SMRT warned them that their leases are at stake should they fail to meet the requirements set by the LTA. The move has been struck with criticism from the National Taxi Association, as they think the operators are at blame too for the lack of mileage on the fleet. This comes after a taxi driver received a letter on April 12th informing he did not meet the daily 250km mark for the first quarter of 2013. SMRT also warned the driver that his contract would be reviewed if he continues to not hit the minimum required quota. The Straits Times reported that the issue surfaced during a feedback session between SMRT and 30 drivers last Friday. The feedback sessions are usually held once a month but the frequency has been increased to once a week in a bid to improve the standards of taxi transportation in Singapore. The taxi association also wants LTA to play a more proactive role to ensure that taxi drivers are fairly treated. They also want the taxi operators to work with the drivers to meet the targets.

Since January this year, new LTA regulations required taxi companies to have at least 70 percent of their fleet travel a distance of a minimum of 250km daily. They are also required to ply the roads during peak hours.
