SG: New laws allow drivers to receive payment in exchange for transportation
New laws have been introduced to bring legal clarity to a previously grey area. Pre-law refresh, owners of private vehicles could be charged should they be caught ferrying passengers around for monetary reward. The new ruling allows drivers to ferry passengers around in exchange for cash, but their destinations must be confirmed before the journey. Drivers cannot offer more than two rides daily as well. One ruling that has remained unchanged, is that it is still illegal for drivers to actively seek out passengers from the side of the road, in public spaces or car parks. It is hoped that the updated law would boost car sharing, reducing congestion on roads and alleviating the load on public transport. However, the authorities have made it clear that this should not be for profit, as they are only allowed to charge the passengers the expenses incurred for the trip.
