SG: Road Safety Campaign Encourages Singapore to Buckle Up

The Singapore Traffic Police, Singapore Road Safety Council, Comfort Delgro and Liberty Insurance yesterday introduced an island-wide seatbelt wearing campaign.  The Liberty Buckle Up! sends the repeated yet often ignored message of wearing seatbelts, with emphasis on a specific group of road users - the passengers. The campaign was launched with a fleet of 16,000 taxis each, carrying the important message "Liberty Buckle Up!"  Mr. Martin Bridger, CEO of Liberty Insurance - a leading insurer championing responsible living in Singapore - says that with the recent swing of fatalities on the roads, this campaign is appropriate to reinforce the importance of wearing seatbelts.

“Road traffic deaths and injuries are fast becoming a growing global epidemic. Global statistics show that every six seconds, someone is killed or injured on the world's roads. Over the past year in Singapore, 7,188 fatal and accidental injuries were recorded on our roads. We might think passengers are hapless, but they actually can do something to better protect themselves,” says Mr. Bridger.

The campaign is an initiative in support of the United Nations Global Road Safety Council's Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, which is a worldwide call to generate action for better road safety measured to achieve a goal of saving 5 million lives by 2020.

Mr. Martin Bridger further said, “While we have seen a gradual decrease in seatbelt wearing violations locally over the years, there still is an imminent need for passengers to correct their misconceptions, and cultivate the simple habit of seatbelt wearing. As corporate partner to the United Nations Global Road Safety Council, Liberty Insurance is committed to helping Singaporeans lead safer and more secure lives, and through the Liberty Buckle Up!, we will do our part to take Singaporeans out of harm's way.”
