SG: Student to pay $70,000 after crashing supercar

Mr Sean Liew Cheng was 22 when he was presented with the opportunity of piloting a Spyker C8 Spyder SWB at a private race track. The event was an exclusive invite-only test drive, in which participants had to sign a form which indemnifies Auto Palace against any loss or damage. All was going well for Liew, right up to the point when he found the Dutch supercar in a spin. Mr Liew had been briefed about the car’s capabilities and how he should drive it. The tutorial includes a demonstration lap with instructor Martin Schilte behind the wheel. Despite knowing his own limitations, Liew decided to push so hard and so fast that he ran out of talent. Unluckily for Liew, he was negotiating a series of turns at the time. That sent the car into a wild anti-clockwise spin, before crashing into a kerb and bouncing back onto the tarmac. He will have to pay damages to Auto Palace, luxury vehicle importer and distributor, for driving the car at a speed beyond his abilities and subsequently damaging it.

Auto Palace has successfully proven to the court that the repair costs of the car and the kerb will amount to $70,000, an amount deemed reasonable by Auto Palace and the court.
