SG: Teacher avoids jail time after sympathetic plea from lawyer

51 year old Tan Joo Nam was driving his mother and her neighbour back home after praying at a temple in Waterloo Street on 11th October 2011 where he smashed into a rubbish truck. The accident was caused by Tan trying to beat the red light at the junction of Seng Poh Road and Tiong Bahru Road. The accident occurred at around 6:40am. Tan’s mother, 77 year old Madam Lim Siam Wee, when fatal crash occurred. She suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her neighbour, Madam Tan. 74, suffered front rib fractures.

The 51 year old teacher was spared jailtime during a court hearing yesterday, after his lawyer managed to prove how devastated he was for causing the collision;Tan was reported to be suffering from major depression after the incident.

For causing such an accident, Tan could have been jailed for up to two years and fined up to $30,000. Owing to the unusual circumstances of the tragedy, his lawyer's plea for compassion, and letters of compassion and encouragement from close friends and colleagues, Tan managed to avoid spending a couple of years in jail, although he was fined $8,000 and disqualified from driving for five years.
