SG: Transport operators slapped with $1.1 million fine

Both SMRT and SBS Transit have been fined a total of $1.1 million dollars for lapses in the safety and service delays on their train networks over the past 10 months. SMRT paid the bulk of the fine, $860,000, for a series of lapses, which included the trackside fire at Newton station and the failure to repair a corroded rail along the Circle Line. SBS Transit paid $250,000 for taking up to two and a half hours to evacuate 250 passengers from a broken down train earlier in June.  The fines collected will go towards helping the needy pay for their transport.
