Barely a day after Suzuki's withdrawal from WRC, Subaru has also followed suit.

Subaru is the third Japanese manufacturer to quit a major motorsport discipline. Honda began the exodus two weeks ago when they left Formula One.

Subaru's decision is also in response to the worldwide economic downturn, which has already begun to affect automakers.

Their partner, Prodrive, will need to redeploy the 20 percent of their staff assigned to the WRC programme. Prodrive is confident however, of a return to the sport in 2010 with a different partner.

Subaru's exit leaves the WRC with only two remaining manufacturers: Ford and Citroen.

Subaru is one of the WRC's most accomplished teams. Since their entry into the WRC in 1989, they have won six world championships at the hands of drivers such as Richard Burns, Colin McRae, and Petter Solberg. The Japanese manufacturer's last championship win was in 2003 with Solberg, while their last race win was the Rally of Mexico in 2005.
