RACING IN THE SHADOWS

On the 28th of September this year, Singapore will be the proud host of the inaugural Formula One night race. Likewise, on the 23rd of February, MPT Motor is organizing its inaugural night street race!

Sponsored by Official Tyre Bridgestone, the format of the “Kallang car park races” (as known to everyone) remains unchanged with 4 parts spread out throughout the year. However, unlike previous years, the significant difference is that this year’s annual MPT Sprint/Supersprint event will take place after dark instead of during the day.

This is good news as the night air is cooler and spectators need not toil under the scorching sun just to support their favourite racers. However, if you’re worried about being unable to see at night, fret not as the races can be watched live from a large screen.

Racing at night brings the entire event to more challenging levels. Reduction in visibility would require more focus and concentration from the racers. Of course, safety measures will be implemented to its best.

This year, there will be some slight changes in the classification of cars as well.

Instead of the usual Class 1 to 20C, organizers decided to simplified in to only 7 classes (See table below).

Typical of previous years, side activities are present to complement the programme and to cater to the non-racers. There will be the AutoStyling Challenge, the Ultimate Sound Challenge and the Race Queen Search. AutoStyling, as well as the Sound Challenge will be interesting this time as owners have to dress up their cars in glow-in-the-dark themes in order to be seen.

Feedback has requested for the format of the Race Queen Search to be
revamped, and indeed it has! Instead of having every round as a qualifying heat, the rounds will follow a progressive system to the finals in November. Thus, Round One will be the audition round where Race Queen hopefuls make their way down to register themselves for the contest. Of course, we will have race queens along with the cars, what is a motorsports event without race queens? So to all lens fans, make your way down but remember to bring your flash (and extra batteries)!

Motorsports is not restricted to the adults only, kids can be involved too! Find out more about the Fun Prix Jamboree 2008 where race princesses and a mini race car will be present.

Last year, Lester Wong of Garage R clinched the 2007 Fastest Time of the Year award. This year, he definitely won’t be missing out and rumours has it that he will be competing in a Nissan Skyline. Is this his secret weapon? We can only await the results.

Well, when the skies turn dark, it is like a whole new world and the unexpected may just happen...
