BYD and Sime Motors, through Vantage Automotive Limited (VAL), have officially introduced the BYD SEALION 6 DM-i in Singapore. It’s their first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) for the local market.

As recently as last year, BYD mentioned that they wouldn't bring in a PHEV to Singapore, due to unfavourable taxes. To find ourselves testing it just last month in Malaysia as part of a pre-launch drive has certainly spiced up this string of events.

Well, according to BYD it's clear that PHEVs have relevance in Singapore due to high-rise living. It might be China’s largest employer, one that can produce 5 million cars a year, but the way it navigates global strategies like a featherweight champion forces home the point that it's primed for success.

Having established itself as Singapore’s top-selling car brand in 2024 and 2025, BYD is expanding its electrification strategy with the Sealion 6 DM-i. Rather than shifting away from EVs, this move broadens its appeal by offering a PHEV solution. It’s certainly a smart move considering the positive reception received by Jaecoo’s J7 PHEV launched earlier this year.

The Sealion 6 is powered by the DM-i Super Hybrid system, pairing an 18.3kWh Blade Battery with a 1.5L petrol engine. It delivers up to 80km of pure electric range (WLTC), has a combined output of 217kW and 300Nm of torque and an efficiency of 5.7L/100km (17.5km/l).

With a turning radius of 5.5 metres, it should suit city driving. Its cabin features a 15.6-inch rotating display, 12.3-inch digital cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Infinity audio and dual wireless charging.

Safety is assured with 6 airbags, a 360° camera, adaptive cruise control and full ADAS. Additional comforts include a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated power front seats and V2L capability. Other key statistics include a rear trunk capacity of 425 litres and a kerb weight of just under 2 tonnes.
