Tiguan is a baby Touareg
As a sign of how serious Volkswagen is about getting into the SUV segment it has launched the Tiguan at the Los Angeles Autoshow.

While it is smaller than the Touareg, VW has design the car to look aggressive - Klaus Bischoff, who was responsible for the exterior design of the car, said: ‘It was very important for us to have the car appear powerful and muscular. For us that was a higher priority than anything else. An off-roader needs a long hood and an upright position. That lends the vehicle self-assuredness and power.’
The other interesting thing about the Tiguan is that it gets a new generation BLUETEC diesel engine which has been jointly developed with Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Also available should be a range direct-injection petrol engines that are currently powering the Golf V and Passat models.
For the Tiguan shown at LA, tyre manufacturer Continental developed a process to impregnate a coloured strip into the tyre to match the car’s orange body colour. Matching tyres – a new trend perhaps? The Tiguan is set to go into production in 2008.
