Toyota tops out ahead of GM as No.1 car maker

Given the sales figures for the first quarter of this year, Toyota’s vehicles have outsold General Motors’s worldwide. Coming at a time when GM had just lost USD $2 billion last year, news doesn’t seem to be getting any better for the company, although there is much hope for them due to their leadership in China’s rapidly expanding market.

From January to March this year, the sales figures from Toyota, which included those from Lexus, Scion, Daihatsu and Hino Motors Ltd, stood at 2.35 million vehicles while GM sold 2.26 million. In 2006, the Japanese car giant’s global production numbers rose 10 percent to 9.018 million vehicles, while GM produced 9.18 million vehicles.

Part of the reasons for Toyota’s edge was its “good image around the world about reliability and ecological technology,” said Koji Endo, who is an auto analyst for Credit Suisse in Tokyo. Analysts also explained that with Toyota’s investment in such technology, opening new plants around the world and brilliant marketing, it has managed to further improve their brand power.
