Volkswagen announced that it will debut the second-generation DSG twin-clutch gearbox in the current fifth generation Golf and Golf Plus as of February 2008.

The seven-speed DSG will be fitted to the 1.4-litre 122 bhp TSI petrol engine when it goes on sale in February next year. Compared to the manual gearbox, the seven-speed DSG will cut carbon dioxide emissions by 10 g/km and boost fuel economy by 3 mpg.

With the addition of a seventh gear, VW have shortened the lower gear ratios to provide for quicker acceleration while the higher gear ratios have been lengthened to reduce loading on the engine and maximise economy.

Volkswagen intends to sell the 7-speed DSG gear box not as a replacement but as an option alongside the current 6-speed DSG gearbox.
