Volkswagen's TSI Technology wins "International Engine of the Year Award"
Volkswagen has for the seventh consecutive time won the "Engine of the Year Award 2013" in the 1.0 to 1.4 litre category. Making it Volkswagen's most successful engine in the history of this international engine technology competition. From 2006, Volkswagen has received a total of 12 trophies from the "Engine of the Year" jury for the constantly progressive 1.4 litre TSI engine, with seven class victories, two overall victories, two "Best new Engine" awards and one "Green Engine of the Year" award. Volkswagen was the world's first manufacturer to introduce active cylinder management (ACT) in the TSI four cylinder in 2012. This technology was common only in large eight or twelve cylinder engines. It made its debut in the VW Polo and Golf 103 kW/140 PS 1.4 TSI. Temporary switch off of the second and third cylinders together with an economical style of driving, reduces the fuel consumption by 0.5 litres per 100 km.

The 1.4 TSI runs quietly and with low vibration with two excellently balanced cylinders as with four active combustion chambers. All the components of the active cylinder management weigh 3 kg altogether. Their actuators, the camshafts and their bearing frames are integrated in the cylinder heat with two low friction bearings reducing shaft friction.
Fuel consumption and CO2 emission of the TSI engines were reduced to 9% compared to its predecessor. The internal friction was reduced and thermal optimization was managed.
The Wolfsburg-based company has to date produced over 3.8 million TSI engines at five production sites worldwide. With the 140 PS TSI with automatic cylinder deactivation (ACT) currently available in the Polo and Golf, Volkswagen will continue to be the global leader in charging strategies for engines with direct fuel injection.
