Volvo's forays into other market segments, such as hatchbacks with the C30, together with a tighter budget have resulted in the delays.

The S60 will only be redesigned in 2010, while the XC90 SUV will only receive a "late-cycle" face-lift that same year. Both models are getting on in age. The S60 was first released in 2000, while the XC90 made its debut back in 2003.

Volvo has spent money developing the new XC60 SUV and on the C02 program, and they believe that this is the right thing to do.

There is also a possibility that Volvo may discontinue the S40. Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo's senior vice president of brand, business and product strategy, said that Volvo was reconsidering killing off the S40 sedan as it hasn't met the sales figures they were hoping to achieve.
