VW shows pre-school kids what they're made of

Volkswagen recently hosted a little show-and-tell session with a group of five to six year old pre-school children from Lorna Whinston Preschool.

Beginning with a tour led by Mr Achim Glogowski, General Manager of Communications, around the Volkswagen Centre located along Alexandra Road, the VW crew were challenged by a deluge of curious questions such as “How does the engine work?” and “How does it make the wheels turn?”

The little car-fanatics-in-training were treated to sights and sounds which most other visitors would neither get to see nor experience, such as taking “elevator rides” on the workshop’s car jack and blasting the Eos’s audio system inside the showroom.

They were also introduced to various vehicular components, taught how an engine works and given the pleasure of scrutinizing the undercarriage of a Golf GTI.

Plus, how many of us, when we were five, got to tell our friends about how we sat in a gorgeous convertible and played around with its roof?

More importantly, the young ones enjoyed a brilliant learning experience, judging from their fearless ways of questioning (which might even put some of us motoring journalists to shame) as well as VW’s age-appropriate, enriching answers.

Of course, no visit to the German automobile manufacturer’s showroom would be complete without dropping by the Volks Cafe for a drink. Just no alcoholic drinks, though.

A short chat with Dr Olaf Duebel, Managing Director, Volkswagen Group Singapore

Oneshift: What message was Volkswagen hoping to send to the public by hosting this event for the children?

Dr Duebel: Volkswagen Group Singapore is more than just a company that manufactures and sells cars. We care about the community that we operate in and hope to instill a sense of learning in children.

The children get a first-hand view of a showroom. They also see what goes on behind the scenes when a car is brought in for repair. Hosting preschoolers at our showroom is a way for us to ‘give back’ to a society that has been so supportive of us, since we established our own retail earlier this year.

OS: Is Volkswagen open to hosting more of such visits from other educational organizations such as secondary schools and polytechnics, perhaps as a way of sharing knowledge and experience to the society?

DR: Yes, we are definitely open to requests from tertiary educational organizations as part of their exponential learning.

OS: Which aspect of the visit did this group of children enjoy most?

DR: The children enjoyed visiting the Service area and seeing how a car is repaired. They had many questions which were answered by our Service Manager from Germany.

So, how was it you said the engine worked again?
