WEC: Giedo Van der Garde to drive in LMP2
Former Caterham F1 driver Giedo van der Garde spent most of 2015 not taking part in professional motorsport. He was embroiled in a contract dispute with Sauber, who offered him a reserve drive after Caterham’s struggles meant they ditched the under-funded Dutchman. However, after 2 years of scrambling to get a competitive drive, it seems as though the 30 year old has found a home – in the form of the WEC’s LMP2 class. He will pilot the Jota's Gibson-Nissan 015S in the European Le Mans Series, and also at Le Mans and Spa in the WEC. He will share his machine with team co-owner Simon Dolan and an undisclosed team-mate for the ELMS rounds. Despite not being able to compete in F1, Van der Garde remained upbeat at the opportunity for actually fighting for wins, a scenario which was highly unlikely in his uncompetitive Caterham machine he drove in 2013. He further said that "To win Le Mans isn't even a dream: it's my goal."
Van der Garde tested a variety of machinery last year, which included a Bentley GT3 car, a bunch of old racers, and was at one point, even linked to a Mercedes DTM driver.
