Big Boss

The 2015 Infiniti Q70 is not a brand new car, but an update on the 2014 model reviewed by us in May last year. In that year, it has gained a design update, new interior fittings tweaks, and most importantly a lookalike makeover to bring it in line with the recently launched Q50 sports saloon...

The Q70 drives like it looks, big and majestic. The torque from the V6 is, at 250Nm, some 50Nm down on some of the European competition. This gives it solid if not sparkling performance exacerbated by noticeable lag from that lazy gearbox. Handling wise, it felt solid yet comfortable on the roads we used yet with predictable cornering on the twisty bits - and not that much body roll considering its heft. The provision of the rear view camera was invaluable due to the big boot, but overall visibility was nonetheless good.

We didn't come close to hitting anything, but if we had, those US-spec airbags (front, side, curtain and head) would have minimised the pain. We did have to use the brakes in anger once, and the ABS kicked in nicely, but with a rather juddery response.

Two niggles surfaced while we were driving. First, the GPS doesn't have a native Singapore map, and uses a third party app overlaid on the standard system. Good for Paris, but not so good for Ang Moh Kio. Second, the in-dial digital readout only gives consumption and average speed. We would have loved a digital speed readout option; surely that's not a big ask?

Overall the Q70 is what it says on the package: a big, solid reassuring V6. It looks brilliant and has many likeable aspects - but the fact it's an upgrade not a new design shows. Here's to the next model.
