Bigger by the numbers
We’re taught that more is more but as the smaller A8L has proved, less is still more…
Although it lacks the robust grunt of the 4.0-litre V8 variant, the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 rewards with decent performance. At 310bhp, it’s hardly considered weak. Together with 440Nm of torque from 2,900rpm, it’s a potent combination that propels the large sedan to 100kmh in just 5.9 seconds.
Prod the throttle and the large sedan complies with immediate action that is paired with a subtle supercharger whine. The 8-speed automatic augments the immense torque from the engine well even when rushed with a heavy throttle input. But in quieter pursuits, gear changes are so silky they happen unnoticed most of the time.
The Audi excites as much as it soothes and with standard adaptive suspension, the car glides over road surface imperfections with relative ease. But in a tight bend, the supple suspension resists lean and maintains a level profile that makes it a class leader in performance driving. Its four wheel drive system maintains plenty of grip in a tight situation and with a 40:60 torque split, the car maintains a positive nose in approach.
Despite the raving performance, Audi manages to boast a combined economy of 12.6km/L. An impressive number considering its size.
The Audi A8L with the 3.0 TFSI is a delightful combination of opulent luxury, dynamic performance and impressive economy. Whether you’re driving or being driven, there’s little to fault in this flagship and it forms a strong argument against numbers being everything.
