MG S6 (Luxury) Review: A Sensible Family EV for Singapore
MG's S6 blends space, range and value, making EV ownership easy for Singaporean families today

The MG S6 arrives with an almost uncanny sense of timing. It ticks boxes that many family-oriented buyers have been quietly drawing up: fully electric, sensibly sized, generously equipped, and - perhaps most crucially - priced within Cat A COE territory.
That last point cannot be overstated. With a sub-$200k price tag, the S6 positions itself as one of the more attainable electric SUVs for families looking to make the leap without stretching into financial discomfort.
But beyond the spreadsheet logic, the S6 has something else going for it - it simply feels right for Singapore roads.

The Inside Story
The MG S6 strikes a careful balance in terms of proportions. It is large enough to convey presence and practicality, yet not so bulky that navigating tight multi-storey carparks of older estates becomes a chore.
Step inside, and the focus on family usability becomes immediately apparent. The cabin is genuinely spacious, with ample room for five adults to sit comfortably without the usual elbow negotiations. Rear passengers, in particular, will appreciate the generous legroom.
A large panoramic roof stretches overhead, flooding the cabin with natural light and amplifying the sense of space. It is a simple feature, but one that makes a significant difference, especially for families with young children who tend to enjoy the openness.

There are thoughtful touches for those seated at the back as well. Beyond the expected rear air-conditioning blowers, MG has gone a step further by equipping the rear seats with seat warmers - an unusual feature in this segment, and one that feels almost… indulgent, in Singapore’s climate. It may not be something you use often here, but it does underscore just how generously equipped the S6 is for its price point.
Material quality is respectable, and while it may not rival premium marques, it delivers exactly what is expected at this price point: Clean, functional, and well thought out.
MG has equipped the S6 with a sound system that punches above its weight. Whether it is your daily commute playlist or a weekend drive with the family, the audio quality is more than adequate; clear, balanced, and enjoyable. Streaming via Spotify becomes a pleasant experience, which is something many buyers will appreciate given how central music has become to the driving experience.

That said, the Bluetooth connectivity does have its moments. On a few occasions, it seemed to hesitate - idling awkwardly while attempting to pair with my iPhone. It is not a dealbreaker, but noticeable enough to mention.
Then again, perhaps I am simply finding an excuse to justify upgrading to the latest iPhone 17 Pro Max.
One detail that deserves special mention, however, is MG’s decision to retain physical buttons for the climate control system. In an era where almost every function is buried within a touchscreen menu, this feels refreshingly sensible. Better still, these buttons have a reassuring tactility to them; they feel solid, well-damped, and intuitive to use on the move. It is a small touch - no pun intended - but one that makes a big difference in day-to-day usability, especially when you just want to adjust the temperature without taking your eyes off the road.

Practically Speaking
If there is one area where the MG S6 confidently asserts its dominance, it is practicality; specifically, boot space.
With 674-litres available even with all seats up, the S6 offers a cavernous load area that will easily accommodate everything from weekly grocery runs to bulky strollers and holiday luggage.
It also features a kick-open tailgate, which proves especially useful when your hands are full - think grocery bags, a folded stroller, or a sleeping toddler in your arms. A simple swipe of the foot under the rear bumper is all it takes, and in day-to-day family use, this small convenience quickly becomes something you rely on more than expected.

Up front, there is also an 86-litre frunk, which adds another layer of practicality. It is perfect for storing charging cables, smaller bags, or even keeping items separate from the main boot. In a family setting, that extra bit of segregation - clean versus messy, groceries versus gear -can make a surprising difference.
To put things into perspective, the boot and frunk combo outclasses several popular electric SUVs in Singapore, including the BYD Sealion 7, Subaru Solterra XT, and Toyota bZ4X. For families, this is not just a number, it translates into real-world convenience.

Driving It
With 146 bhp on tap, the MG S6 is not going to set any performance benchmarks. But numbers rarely tell the full story with electric vehicles.
The 350 Nm of torque, available almost instantly, ensures that the car feels responsive in urban driving conditions. Traffic light sprints are handled with ease, and merging onto expressways is done without drama.
It is not fast in the traditional sense, but it is brisk, smooth, and entirely adequate for its intended purpose. And for a family-oriented SUV, that is precisely what matters.
Underneath its family-friendly exterior, the MG S6 features a rear-wheel drive layout; a configuration that quietly adds a layer of engagement for the driver. When driving alone, there is a surprising degree of composure through corners. You can carry a bit more speed than expected, enough to keep pace with that eager Golf just ahead. The car feels planted, helped in no small part by the standard Michelin e-Primacy tyres, which provide reassuring grip.

However, as the corner tightens, the laws of physics inevitably assert themselves. Understeer creeps in, reminding you that this is, after all, a family SUV and not a hot hatch. Still, the fact that it allows for even a hint of driving enjoyment is worth acknowledging.
Steering weight is calibrated for ease of use, making it well suited for a multi-driver household. It is light enough for daily manoeuvring, though keener drivers may find themselves wishing for more feedback.
Where the S6 truly excels is in ride refinement. At expressway speeds, the cabin remains impressively insulated from both wind and road noise. This is a car that feels composed and calm, qualities that are especially valuable for family use. If you have a baby or toddler onboard, there is a good chance they will fall asleep with little effort; a testament to the car’s quiet and stable nature.
In the context of Singapore’s often congested roads, this level of refinement becomes a daily luxury.

If there is one figure that will resonate strongly with local buyers, it is this: 530 km of range on a single charge.
In the context of Category A electric SUVs, that places the MG S6 right at the very top of the class, comfortably ahead of most rivals that hover around the 400–450km mark.
But numbers alone do not tell the full story. In Singapore, where daily driving distances are relatively short but often fragmented - think school runs, office commutes, grocery stops, enrichment classes - the S6’s range advantage translates into something far more meaningful: less time thinking about charging.
Realistically, even with multiple errands in a single day, the S6 should comfortably last four days or more before needing a top-up. That is the kind of convenience that begins to rival, and in some cases even surpass, the ease of living with an internal combustion car.

In A Nutshell
The MG S6 does not try to be everything to everyone, and that is exactly why it works.
It clearly understands its audience: Families in Singapore who want to transition into EV ownership without unnecessary complications or excessive cost. It delivers space, comfort, practicality, and just enough driving enjoyment to keep things interesting.
Perhaps, its strongest suit is how effortlessly it fits into daily life here. With a class-leading range that reduces charging anxiety, a genuinely spacious cabin, and thoughtful touches like proper physical controls, rear seat heating, and clever storage solutions like the frunk, the S6 feels like a very well-judged decision.
And in today’s market, that might just be what makes it a hit.
