Toyota Corolla Altis 1.6 Review: Family friend

What we like:

Significantly improved driving dynamics as well as ride comfort. An exhaustive list of standard equipment that are on par with the European makes.

What we dislike:

A flat folding rear seat for ease of loading cargo.

This is where the Corolla sees most refinement. While the engine remains a four cylinder 1.6-litre under the hood, the way in which its 121bhp and 154Nm of torque is delivered has changed. Where the older car would sound rough when hurried, the new car maintains a low groan even when pushed pedal to the metal.

Unlike the older four speed auto, the new seven step CVT has smoothened the way power is delivered which has also contributed to the reduced noise level. With the added refinement of the interior with better insulation, tire and wind noise is kept to a minimum when cruising on the highway. A marked improvement over the older model.

Another significant change is in its handling. Now sporting an electric steering rack, the steering is well weighted but lacks significant feel. However, it is accurate much like the one used in the Auris. Coupled with this improved handling is the suspension that offers a significantly more comfortable ride over the older model. The new suspension is also more compliant when taking corners with aplomb. Maintaining a stable disposition and offering greater confidence when taking a fast bend.

The new Corolla is by far the most refined we’ve ever driven and coupled with the level of equipment included as standard, it has closed the gap with the Europeans even more than ever before.

Most impressive are the improved driving dynamics that allowed us to drive the family sedan with a lot more confidence than we dared with the older model.

The new car is so good that you no longer need to feel bashful about taking Mom’s Corolla…
