On the first practical lesson, the participants were requested to brake as hard as they could on a wet road. The objective of this lesson is simple - To allow the drivers to be "acclimatized" to the pulsating sensation of the ABS - Inexperienced drivers may be caught off-guard by this sensation and release the brake pedal in shock...Not ideal when you desperately need to scrub off speed in an emergency situation!

Once participants had gotten used to the correct method of depressing the brake pedal, we got on to more complicated lessons. The participants and their cars were put through several simulated situations - such as brake and steer left, brake and steer right, brake around corners -so that they will be familiar and know how to react under such situations.

As simple as it may seem, it still is a harrowing experience especially when you are hurling towards a cone wall at 50km/h, while anticipating the blow of the instructor's whistle...Fun, but harrowing.

The SMSC Defensive Driver Training Course ended in a “grand finale” of fun and excitement - participants were seen pushing their cars as hard as they dare through a slalom course, which also required the drivers to reverse into and out of a "pit stop" during the slalom.

To sum it up, these practical lessons allows the participants to experience first hand the handling of their own cars under extreme and varying road conditions (straight road, sharp turns and around corners), which serves not only as a bonding session for the participants with their car, but also educates them about using one of the most common but relatively unused system of the car - the ABS.

If you would like to be safe and keep safe on the roads, this course is definitely a must-have for you. SMSC organizes such defensive courses about four times a year, so do look out for it.
