How yearly depreciation is calculated

Yearly depreciation is how much of a car's price you lose for each year left on its COE, after the PARF rebate you get back at the end. The calculator works it out as:

Yearly depreciation = (sale price − PARF rebate at COE expiry) ÷ years left on the COE

The PARF rebate at COE expiry uses the Above 9 to 10 years rate in the table below: a share of the Additional Registration Fee (ARF) paid, up to any cap. Entering the registration date sets the COE expiry to 10 years later, less one day. A car on a renewed COE gets no PARF rebate, so enter $0 ARF.

Without a registration date, the calculator uses the uncapped rates for cars registered on or before 22 Feb 2023. Uploading the log card fills in the registration date, COE expiry date and ARF paid. If it also shows LTA's rebate amounts, the calculator takes the PARF rebate from them. If that figure is above the cap for the car's registration date ($30,000 from 20 Feb 2026, $60,000 from 23 Feb 2023), the calculator treats the COE as obtained under the earlier rules: the 2023 rules, or the uncapped rates if the figure is above $60,000. Otherwise it keeps the rates for the registration date.

Paper value is a separate idea: what you would get back by deregistering the car today, which is the PARF rebate for its current age plus the COE rebate, a prorated refund of the COE for the months left. The calculator does not use paper value.

LTA applies these rates by the bidding exercise the car's COE came from. The calculator goes by registration date, so figures are indicative for a car registered soon after 22 Feb 2023 or 20 Feb 2026 on an earlier COE.
