Buying a commercial vehicle
We explore the points to take note of when purchasing a commercial vehicle to facilitate your business.
Besides practical considerations to take note of, there are other financial considerations as well that will impact your company’s bottom line.
When choosing your commercial vehicle, it is important to take note of what fuel type to use and weigh the costs involved.
For diesel driven vehicles, you are required to pay a higher road tax but you get lower diesel cost as a trade-off. If petrol is chosen, the benefits are reversed with lower road tax but higher fuel cost.
You are required to source for a Vehicle Parking Certificate to park in HDB / URA or licensed parking operator lots. Under VPC rules, any commercial vehicle exceeding maximum laden weight of 5,000kg or unladen weight of 1,800kg or bus with seating capacity beyond 15 (excluding driver) will require this VPC. VPC should be valid throughout the road tax validity period.
Like private vehicles, commercial vehicles require the same season parking labels to be allowed inside HDB car parks or designated heavy vehicle lots. For vehicles with an unladen weight of 1,800kg and below, the costs are $90 for Multi Storey Carparks (MSCP) and $65 for surface lots per month. For vehicles with unladen weight above 1,800kg (not exceeding 2,000kg), it will cost $185 for both Multi Storey Carparks and surface lots.
When parking in a MSCP, it is important to take note of your vehicle’s height. Most HDB MSCPs have a height limit of 1.8 – 1.9m. This is an important consideration when choosing your commercial vehicle as its height can range from between 1.9m to 2.02m.
