As National Day approaches, you’ll see many HDB flats hanging out the national flag and see school-going children don in red and white on the eve of 9 August to celebrate our nation’s 53rd birthday. What are some other ways you could display your patriotism? Perhaps dress your car up to the nines!

Significance of our National Flag

But first, a little on the significance of our National Flag: the National Flag is Singapore’s most prominent and visible symbol of statehood. It represents the ideals, beliefs, and values that Singapore and the people of Singapore stand for as a nation amidst the rich and diverse cultural make-up, and forms a vital element of our national identity. Therefore, the National Flag needs to be treated with utmost respect, dignity and honour.

From each year, the Singapore government encourages individuals and businesses to fly the National Flag to celebrate Singapore’s birthday. During this period, the National Flag can be flown without a flagpole and night illumination. In addition, the Flag can be flown on private and commercial vehicles during this same period.

1 July to 30 September

You’ll still have about two more months to display the National Flag on your vehicles so why not start now?

1. Display of mini Flags

The mini flags can only be displayed on vehicles during the National Day Celebrations period (1 July to 30 September yearly) and needs to be securely affixed, fastened or clipped on the vehicles, ensuring that it does not come off while driving.

These mini flags are a way to show your patriotic side and looking at it on top of several vehicles is a delightful scene! These mini flags cost under $2.50 and can be bought online or at party stores.

2. Flag Decals

Another way to display your patriotism is the use of Flag decals. One great thing is that for Flag decals, they can be shown throughout the year! However, one must still treat the Flag with respect and dignity to ensure that the Flag is kept in its original form, without any words or graphics superimposed. This decal should also not be displayed on the wheels or the exhaust.

3. Side Mirror Covers

We’re also seeing several cars donning side mirror covers of the Singapore Flag that looks cute? These side mirror covers need to be worn correctly though ensuring that the Singapore Flag is upright and in the correct orientation. These covers can be bought online or at petrol kiosks.

4. Decorate your dashboard with the Singapore Flag themed items

If you think that the exterior display of the Flag is too much, perhaps decorate the interior of your car!

There are standing mini flags in the market where you could grab and tape them down in our car. That way, it’s something that you as a driver will be able to see whenever you are heading for your travels.

Remember these old school country flags erasers? Buy a few of them and decorate your dashboard with them. After National Day, you can also double it up and use them as they are (or keep them for next year!).

Because displaying your patriotism should not just be an occasional thing, show it throughout the year with some models of Singapore’s key attractions! If you have schooling children three years ago, they were given the SG50 Lego Set that you could build and display on your dashboard!
