From race to road
Porsche has a heritage of making face cars for the road. These cars are very special indeed.

The 904 first started life as a race car for the 1964 season as a replacement to the 718. The 904 was better known as the Carrera GTS as Porsche had to relinquish use of the ‘90' nomenclature as Peugeot laid claim for the rights to use it. Porsche designed the GTS variant first to compete in the FIA-GT class at international racing events.
The street version appeared in 1964 in order to comply with Group 3 homologation regulations requiring a certain number of road-going variants be sold by the factory. 100 had to be built to satisfy homologation requirements but up to 106 were produced. Flat-four engines with varying power outputs and capacities powered the lightweight 904s but 1965 saw the introduction of some six-cylinder and V8 904s to satisfy customer demand.
The 904 has won legendary races like the Targa Florio, Le Mans, Sebring and so on. It was also entered in rallies, where in 1965, it took a class win in the Monte Carlo Rally.
