The typical conundrum: a keen driver/husband wanting a car that’s fun to drive, while his wife wanting a car that just works well for the family and keeps them safe.

Rather few cars can meet these seemingly irreconcilable needs quite so deftly, but one car that ticked all of these boxes and more is the all-new Skoda Octavia RS.

It is fast - 0-100 km/h is achieved in 6.7 seconds - and not just in a straight line. Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) paired with an electronic LSD ensures the car handles sharply.

This is all well and good, but there are many other simply clever features that will appeal to the wife too. Massage seats immediately make a commute more relaxing. Dial the DCC to its most comfortable setting and the car rides luxuriously. The number of airbags have been increased to eight - keeping all occupants including the young ones safe.

Going to check out a new grocery store? With wireless charging and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto for smartphones, one can navigate without having to worry about a depleting battery life.

And when your hands are full with shopping bags, the Virtual Pedal allows you to open the boot without the need to use the key. The liftback boot makes loading such a cinch, too.

To top it all off, it looks sharp and muscular from all angles. Quite a convincing case for the wife, right?
