Market Watch: Cool Cars With Monthly Depreciation Under S$1,000

COE got you thinking that cars in Singapore cost two kidneys a year? Not quite!

Look past the showroom hype and into the classifieds - yes, places like Carousell, and you’ll unearth genuinely cool machines flying under the radar for under S$1,000 depreciation per month.

The trick here isn’t about spending more - it’s knowing what bracket to target within the used car realm.

Start by filtering smart - set a depreciation range that fits your budget, and let the listings whet your appetite. You’ll find plenty of safe bets, sure, but keep scrolling. Now and then, something different pops up, a left-field choice, a hot hatch, a quirky luxo-barge. That’s the sweet spot!

2011 Peugeot RCZ

The Peugeot RCZ still turns heads with its double-bubble roof, wide stance and blistered arches; still one of the most distinctive coupes on Singapore roads. It’s also relatively light at less than 1,400 kg. More than 300-litres of cargo space means spontaneous road trips aren’t a stretch.

Beneath the hood sits a 1.6-litre turbocharged motor that also powers the MINI Cooper S and Citroen DS3. An offbeat choice for sure, but that’s exactly why it’s cool!

2010 MINI Cooper S Cabriolet

The 2010 MINI Cooper S Cabriolet pairs compact proportions with proper hardware - a force-fed 1.6-litre (shared with the RCZ but in a different state of tune), short wheelbase and stiff chassis tuning give it that sharp, go-kart like response.

Pop the roof, and enjoy the elements even at crawling speeds. At S$11,700 depreciation annually, it’s an affordable, characterful alternative to today’s tech-laden drives.

2010 Audi A5 Cabriolet

We wouldn’t blame you if the Audi A5 Cabriolet wasn’t on your radar in 2010. It was up against serious competition - the hardtop E93 3 Series was sportier, while Merc’s A207 E-Class felt more upscale.

Left-field choices included Saab’s 9-3 Convertible and Volvo’s C70 - they meant business too! But over a decade on, the A5 arguably looks the most resolved, with clean lines and a neatly tailored fabric roof giving it lasting appeal.
