The first of such dual-clutch transmissions from VW was fitted into the 2003 Golf R32, and today one of every four VW cars produced comes with this efficient system; not forgetting the S-Tronic gearbox in the Audi range and the Ricardo-made seven speed DSG in the Bugatti Veyron.

The DSG system takes its stand from the basic pneumatic clutched boxes, improving it further. With two clutches, the gearbox can have two gears engaged at any one time, one handling the driving of the car, and the other waiting to take over. Such a system allows for exceptionally fast shift times and saves plenty of power and fuel.
