AMG has never been known to care about fuel efficiency - till now. With the ever tightening restrictions on emissions and high fuel prices to boot, AMG realised that the only way forward wasn't just about upping power gains.

So how can you have better performance without outrageous power outputs? Engineers will seek to utilise lightweight materials for new models so that smaller engines can be used.

In the next few years, AMG will introduce a model using the new mild hybrid system that debuts in the S400 BlueHybrid next year. AMG predicts that despite similar performance to the current AMG 6.2L, a 30 percent increase in fuel economy can be achieved.

Diesel engines will also be part of the picture, although the focus for AMG will no doubt be diesels of the fire breathing type.
