AU: LPG to be made more available
Gas Energy Australia CEO Michael Carmody is calling for radical changes to the way the fuel is distributed in Australia. Under the current ruling, vehicle importers do not have to make their cars run on fuel designed for the Australian market. He hopes that that would change. Not only that, he has also called for policy changes to require the Australian Government to purchase mainly Australian-made LPG vehicles. Mr Carmody's call to make LPG more available would certainly find favour with motorists, since LPG is cheaper than petrol or diesel, and it is less polluting as well. What’s more, the fuel is made in Australia, unlike Petrol and Diesel that has to be imported. In fact, Australia has enough LPG to self-sufficient for the next 40 to 50 years. He also finds in contradictory that the Australian Government supports LPG conversions with a $1000 rebate, and yet the infrastructure, though present, is not widespread enough.
Currently, only 2 Australian made vehicles, the LPi Falcon and LPG Commodore, run on LPG.It may be a bigger hurdle to encourage foreign car makers to import LPG vehicles into the country; in fact, Kia Australia has said that for the forseeable future, there is no plan to import an LPG Kia into Australia.
