When the E46 M3 was first introduced, the S54B32 engine, capable of 343hp, was the highest specific output naturally aspirated engine produced by BMW. It went on to win the International Engine of the Year award in 2001.

The last BMW model to use this powerplant was the outgoing Z4 model, which has since ceased production.

The new BMW Z4 will continue to use straight six engines, albeit in 2.5 liter and twin-turbo 3.0 liter guises.
