F1: Manor may receive Mercedes Engines for 2016

What better way to get into the spirit for F1 than to discuss what will happen to the various engine suppliers in the sport for 2016? As far as we can work out, Renault looks set to buy out Lotus Mercedes. That seems like the only way the French manufacturer can remain in the sport next year, for both Red Bull and Toro Rosso have prematurely terminated their contracts with them. Whilst the Red Bull-backed teams are currently lusting after a Mercedes powerplant, the guys at Stuttgart have no plans to supply the Austrian team with their powerplants, leaving them with Honda or Ferrari. However, seeing as the only reason they are parting company with Renault is due to their uncompetitive package, it makes no sense for them to switch to the currently-underperforming Honda motor. As Ferrari is the only manufacturer left, and the only one to have not commented on the rumour, we can safely assume the Bulls will be powered by the Prancing Horse next year. As the Mercedes motor is the cheapest of the 4 powerplants currently in F1, and also the most competitive, it makes sense that Manor have been very interesting in acquiring one recently. Talks are currently in progress, and we should receive confirmation soon enough if anything moves past the ‘in-talk’ phase.

If that is true, and if Honda doesn’t squeeze a little more juice out of their powerplant, there is a good chance their current on-track rivals may end up leaving them behind in the dust. It may be still quite far away, but it 2016 seems to be hotting up nicely!
